HOLY COMMUNION
We’re just over half-way through the season of Pentecost and it seems like we’re wandering, lost at sea. Months ago we celebrated the Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord, yet we’re still months away from celebrating His Advents— both in His Incarnation and in His Coming—Again.
This season of wandering and waiting is like the Christian life—Jesus ascended nearly 2000 years ago and now as His followers, we wait. Time passes. We know that Christ is going to come again but we cannot yet see that horizon and when it will finally appear in the distance is a mystery.
But we are not left to our own devices. Today, we celebrate Holy Communion, one of the Sacraments which Christ instituted (began and instructed His Church to continue doing); this is one of His gifts which sustains us through life as God’s children.
Just before Christ was crucified, He celebrated a meal with His disciples; here He took bread and wine and declared that there are, respectively, His body and blood, given for them and for the forgiveness of their sins. In this meal we remember what Christ endured to be the sacrifice in our stead, and we receive His body and blood in, with, and under the elements of bread and wine, just like He said.
This gift forgives your sins, and where there is forgiveness of sins there is also your life and your salvation. While you receive all of these in your baptism, that sacrament is akin to entrance into God’s family, His Church. Holy Communion then sustains believers with the same gifts because the journey we are on is neither short nor easy, and Satan, the World, and our own sinful flesh would love nothing more than to send us down a terrible path and find ourselves outside of God’s grace. So that would not happen, Christ has given this gift to sustain us all our days.
As you prepare to receive this gift, please take time to examine yourself. The questions on pages 329-330 will help you do just this. And should any questions or concerns remain, the pastors would be honoured to sit down and have a conversation with you.
